What is HEIC, and why convert it?

HEIC is the format iPhone uses for photos by default. It is based on HEIF, which Apple introduced with iOS 11, and it stores the same visual quality as JPEG in a smaller file.

The catch is compatibility. Some Windows PCs, older apps and many websites cannot open HEIC files, so converting to JPG is the easiest way to share a photo with anyone.

Stop your iPhone saving photos as HEIC

In Settings, go to Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPEG. Photos you have already taken stay HEIC, and Formatly converts them in a tap.

Questions and answers

Is this HEIC to JPG converter free?
Yes. It is free, has no sign up, and converts one photo at a time.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device. The photo is never sent to a server.
Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
JPG uses lossy compression, so a little detail can be lost. At high quality the difference is hard to see. Choose PNG if you need a lossless copy.
Can I convert many HEIC photos at once?
Not on this page. Formatly on iPhone converts dozens of photos at once and can merge them into one PDF.
Why does my photo open as HEIC on Windows?
iPhone saves photos as HEIC by default, and some Windows PCs cannot open them without an extra extension. Converting to JPG makes the photo open everywhere.
